is a childhood dream. On Saturday night, Jarrod Shoemaker had the opportunity
to turn his Olympic dreams into a reality. Beijing, the host of the 2008
Olympics, was the sight of the first Olympic qualifier for the American

USA Triathlon - Sept 20, 2007
BEIJING, China – With two past Olympians on the start list for the
Americans at the first Olympic qualifying event, Jarrod Shoemaker knew
he would have to have the race of his life to earn a spot on the 2008
U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team.
The 25-year-old from Sudbury, Mass., did just that, earning the first
spot for the U.S. men with an 11th place finish at the ITU BG Beijing

Sudbury native Jarrod Shoemaker, a standout long-distance runner at Dartmouth
College, always wanted to give triathlons a try after graduation in 2004.
Last weekend, the former Lincoln-Sudbury High three-sport star reached
the pinnacle in that challenging event as the first American finisher
(11th overall) at the Beijing World Cup, which earned him a place on the
US triathlon team for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The event - which
includes running, biking, and swimming - was held on the Olympic course.

Shoemaker ignored the oddsmakers who made 2005 ITU World Number One Hunter
Kemper and two-time ITU World Cup winner Andy Potts prohibitive favorites.
As he did at the BG HY-Vee World Cup in June, Shoemaker used a fast 31:37
run to finish first American. Today he was 11th overall, but more important
- he outpaced US veteran stars Hunter Kemper (15th) and Andy Potts (18th)
to grab the first US Men's Olympic Triathlon team slot by the throat.

Last weekend Jarrod Shoemaker was a surprise qualifier for the Beijing
Games in the men's triathlon by taking home an Courtesy of USA Triathlonautomatic
selection reserved for the top American finisher in the Beijing BG Triathlon
World Cup. Shoemaker stayed strong in the water, then rode hard on the
bike, ultimately outpacing two former Olympians among his teammates, to
finish 11th overall. The 25-year-old from Sudbury, Mass., talks to NBCOlympics.com
about the mask he wore during his stay in China, partying on the Great

BEIJING (AP) — Jarrod Shoemaker and Laura Bennett earned spots on the
2008 U.S. Olympic triathlon team.
The 25-year-old Shoemaker, from Sudbury, Mass., was timed in 1 hour,
49 minutes, 44 seconds, good for 11th in the qualifying event at the ITU
BG Beijing World Cup on Sunday. The 32-year-old Bennet, from North Palm
Beach, Fla., was third in 2:02:06 in the 1.5-kilometer swim, 40K bike

began to pull away en route to a 24:23 win. The real race was for second
as Kyle King of Blowing Rock, N.C. (24:28), edged Vinny Mulvey of New
Rochelle, N.Y. (24:29), and Kassahun Kabiso of the Westchester (N.Y.)
